Up to five years in prison may be faced by a road pirate who was placed in the custody of the Lubań County Police Headquarters. Through his irresponsible behavior on the road, the man exposed others to a direct risk of loss of life or health and damaged another vehicle. The detainee was also charged with possession of drugs after police officers found marijuana on him.
The incident occurred on July 21, 2016, at approximately 2:00 p.m. in Lubań, near the intersection of Dobrowskiego and Polna streets. Moments earlier, the driver of a Mazda had almost caused a head-on collision with the driver of a BMW. When the BMW driver stopped and got out of his car to reprimand the Mazda driver, the latter drove into him twice, hitting his legs with the bumper.
The injured man saved himself by fleeing and jumped onto the sill of his car, thereby avoiding another impact. However, the perpetrator struck the injured man's car door, tearing it off, and then drove away. At the time, the injured man's three-year-old nephew was also in the car.
The perpetrator was identified. He turned out to be a 38-year-old resident of Lubań who had previously been recorded for various offenses. Officers found marijuana on the man. The detainee was taken to police custody. An examination conducted by officers showed that the man was sober. However, there is a suspicion that he may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances. Detailed tests will be carried out to confirm or rule out this suspicion.
The evidence collected by the police provided grounds for bringing, at this stage, three charges concerning exposing others to a direct risk of loss of life or health, destruction of property, and possession of intoxicating substances. For the acts of which the man is currently suspected, he may face up to five years in prison.
Today, the detainee will be escorted by officers to the prosecutor's office. The police and the prosecution will also ask the court to apply a preventive measure in the form of temporary detention.
