Officers from the Lubin County Police Headquarters organised a meeting at the “Senior” Day Care Centre in Lubin. During the meeting, students from the “five” presented an artistic performance entitled “Grandma, Grandpa, Don’t Let Yourself Be Scammed”.

The first prevention activities aimed at our seniors as part of this project took place on 10 March at the Muza Cultural Centre in Lubin. The students’ performances were watched then by actor Stanisław Górka, known from the television series “Plebania”. Police officers also met with children at their schools, recording film footage that was handed over to the Lower Silesian Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław.

The primary aim of the campaign is to make society more aware of situations in which older people become victims of crime. It is a multifaceted project aimed at various groups:

  • the younger generation (children and grandchildren), who should not leave older people to fend for themselves
  • bank employees, who should pay attention to large withdrawals made by elderly people
  • support workers, who would intervene in situations where older people have no contact with their family or relatives
  • clergy, who would inform older people about the dangers when in contact with them, including during religious services
  • older people—to increase seniors’ awareness of the dangers and ways of avoiding them.

Usually pretending to offer urgent help, perpetrators exploit the helplessness and loneliness of older people. They act very cunningly, changing and modifying their deceptive methods. From pretending to be a grandchild to pretending to be a son or a police officer—the form changes, but the method remains the same: handing cash to a stranger in the belief that one is helping close relatives.

– We thank all the students and educators for their tremendous commitment and wonderful ideas in support of such a noble cause. Let’s help and not leave our grandmothers and grandfathers to fend for themselves, appeal the Lubin officers.

During the meeting, participants received phone stickers and leaflets warning them about scams.
