On 8 May 2016, after 11 a.m., an officer from the Traffic Division of the Lubin police, driving a police car through the city centre, noticed a group of people shouting that one of the apartments was on fire. The officer immediately passed the information to the duty officer, who notified the fire service.

Without waiting for the rescuers to arrive, the police officer began evacuating the residents of the staircase where the fire had broken out. First, he went to the floor where the apartment from which smoke was coming out was located. However, no one opened the door. When he knocked on the neighbours’ door to inform them of the danger, it turned out that the owner of the burning apartment was there.

Instead of leaving the building, the elderly woman entered her apartment and, despite the officer’s call, did not want to leave it. The police officer followed her. All the rooms were filled with smoke. Taking into account the danger to the woman’s life and health, the officer forcibly led her out of the home to a safe place.

As police officers and firefighters initially determined, the probable cause of the fire was a lit candle left in the apartment.
