Bolesławiec traffic police have acquired a speed camera. The modern device will allow officers to measure vehicle speeds in places where such measurements were previously difficult or impossible.

The device at the disposal of Bolesławiec police is a so-called mobile speed camera. In the future, five static speed cameras will be installed in the area covered by Bolesławiec traffic police operations. The devices are to be installed along Route 4, including in the localities of Wilczy Las, Kruszyn and Czerna.

How does a speed camera work?

A speed camera photographs vehicles that exceed a specified speed threshold. The device records the following: the vehicle, its registration number, the driver's image, the date and time of the incident, the location where the offense was committed, the speed at which the driver was traveling, and the permitted speed.

All the information is visible in the photograph automatically taken by the device. The owner of a vehicle that exceeded the permitted speed is then summoned to a police unit to pay the fine. If the vehicle was not being driven by its owner, the owner is responsible for informing the police who was driving it at that time (Article 78(4) of the Road Traffic Act).

Exceeding the speed limit is not the only offense for which a fine may be imposed. The photograph (from the speed camera) also shows whether the driver is talking on a mobile phone, wearing a seat belt, and whether the vehicle being driven has its lights on. Penalty points for offenses are added together, while a fine for committing several offenses at once may amount to as much as PLN 1,000.
