Police established that a group of men had been stealing phone units from January 2005 to September 2006. The men operated in the areas of Bolesławiec, Lwówek Śląski and Jarosławiec. They broke into telecommunications cabinets, connected to telephone lines and, by calling a special number, topped up mobile phone accounts. In this way, they robbed at least 300 people who subscribed to landline telephone services. The victims received high telephone bills.
In September last year, while searching Mariusz P.'s apartment, police officers from Bolesławiec found a specially constructed device used to connect to cables in telecommunications cabinets. The man also possessed a mobile phone and telephone cards whose numbers matched the call records collected as evidence in the case. The officers also identified 20 people whose mobile phones had been topped up through the thieves' activities.
Based on the evidence collected so far, it has been established that at least 300 people were victims in the case. The investigation is ongoing and may expand. Those suspected of stealing phone units face a sentence of between three months and three years in prison.
