In the summer of 2010, a young man attempted to rape a 66-year-old woman from Legnica. The woman managed to defend herself, and the perpetrator fled. During their work, police officers secured, among other things, biological traces originating from the perpetrator, which were entered into a police database operating in all European Union countries.

In 2014, officers from Berlin contacted the Legnica police. It turned out that there had been a similar case involving an attempted rape of a woman there. Biological traces were also secured in that case, and the data were entered into the information system. The system indicated that the perpetrator’s DNA data in both cases were identical.

The 24-year-old man from Legnica is currently in custody in Berlin. Procedures have already begun to transfer the detainee to Poland, where he will be charged. He faces up to 12 years in prison.
