The tragic incident took place 22 years ago, on the night of August 21–22, 1993, on the road leading from Chmielno to Zbylutów. Returning from a disco in Chmielno, the young woman was attacked, severely beaten and raped by the perpetrator. The assailant then murdered her.

The girl’s mutilated body was found on August 23, 1993. For 22 years, the perpetrator of this brutal murder remained unpunished.

However, despite the discontinuation of the investigation, intensive efforts by a prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra and officers from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław led to the killer being apprehended. Previously unavailable techniques for examining evidence secured at the scene also helped. These included a detailed and rapid method of analyzing DNA from traces secured at the murder scene and material collected for comparative testing from the suspected perpetrator.

The killer turned out to be a resident of one of the villages near Lwówek, now 41-year-old Jan G.. At the time of the crime, he was 19 years old.

The prosecutor charged him with murdering the victim with particular cruelty and raping her.

The suspect confessed to the rape. However, he denied killing his victim.

At the request of the District Prosecutor in Jelenia Góra, the local District Court remanded Jan G. in custody for three months. The man had previously been convicted of driving while intoxicated and giving false testimony. He could now face life imprisonment.
“This case clearly shows that no perpetrator of murder, even decades later, can feel immune from punishment,” investigators from Jelenia Góra said.
