Unfortunately, this moment may be disrupted by someone who has visited the cemetery for an entirely different purpose. Some people take advantage of this period and our distraction as an opportunity to steal.

To ensure that nothing disrupts the moment we devote to our deceased loved ones, let’s not take large amounts of money with us when going to the cemetery. We will not need them there, and they may become the target of pickpockets. Let’s take only as much cash as we need to buy candles and wreaths. While tidying the grave and its surroundings and lighting candles, let’s keep an eye on our handbag, coat and other valuables. It is a good idea for a close one or an acquaintance to accompany us to the cemetery. This gives us a better opportunity to keep an eye on our personal belongings.

While at the cemetery, let’s pay attention to people around us who appear to be there without any clear purpose. If their behavior seems suspicious, inform cemetery staff or the police. We often know, at least by sight, the people who care for neighboring graves. So if we meet someone else there, let’s take an interest. We can always ask who the person is. If we explain the reason for our interest, no one will probably take offense. Let’s remember to keep money, documents and mobile phones, whenever possible, in an inside pocket of our clothing. This will certainly make it more difficult for a thief to attempt to steal them.

Heavy traffic and difficulties resulting, among other things, from temporarily introduced traffic-management arrangements are also situations we have to deal with at this time. That is why it is so important to remember to adjust our speed to the weather conditions, maintain safe distances between vehicles and use the lights with which our car is equipped in accordance with the regulations.

Let’s also remember to wear seat belts and use devices for safely transporting children. When getting out of the car in front of the cemetery, make sure that we have locked it properly, including the door locks, trunk and windows. We should also not leave valuables in plain sight. To make the journey to the cemetery safe and, as far as possible, as smooth as possible, let’s follow the instructions of police officers and municipal guards, who will be present at all traffic-sensitive locations during the holiday.

When walking to the cemetery, often along a road without a sidewalk, let’s remember to wear the required reflective elements, which will make us visible after dark.
