Officers previously inspected roads in the vicinity of educational institutions, paying attention to the condition of road markings in these locations. Since 1 September 2015, officers have been paying particular attention to the behaviour of drivers travelling near schools, so that all children can reach them safely.
The nationwide “Safe Journey to School” campaign begins at the start of every school year. As part of preventive measures, Lower Silesian police officers inspected areas around educational institutions as early as August. Officers primarily checked pedestrian crossing markings, as well as the placement of vertical and horizontal road signs.
During the campaign, officers from the traffic and prevention divisions safeguard the safety of pedestrians and, through their presence, remind drivers that children are starting their classes again. During meetings with students at schools throughout the school year, officers will talk to the children about how to avoid dangerous situations on the way to school.
Let us also remember that, as parents, we should set good examples for our children. Let us make sure that our children know that we cross the road only in permitted places, and do so sensibly and responsibly. To increase children’s safety, let us equip their clothing and backpacks with reflective elements visible after dark.
