The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, 8 August 2015. That day, the suspect’s brother arrived at the apartment with his partner and children, including his 3-month-old daughter. The men had been in conflict for some time. Both were intoxicated. An argument quickly broke out between them.

They went outside, where they fought. After the fight, which Paweł K. felt he had lost, when his brother, his partner and the child in her arms left the building and headed home, he ran after them. In the yard, he grabbed a metal rod or pipe and used it to hit the child on the head.

The girl suffered serious bodily injuries, including a depressed and fractured skull, a brain contusion and severe intracerebral bleeding. According to the forensic medicine expert appointed in the case, these injuries put the child’s life at risk.

Soon after the incident, the police—called by neighbors during the fight—arrested Paweł K. Statements from witnesses questioned in the case indicate that K. acted intentionally.

After sobering up, the man was therefore charged with intentionally causing serious bodily injuries to a child. During questioning by both the police and the prosecutor, Paweł K. denied committing the crime and gave explanations presenting increasingly more favorable versions of events.

On 10 August of that year, the prosecutor submitted a request to the court for Paweł K.’s temporary detention. The court remanded the man in custody for three months. The offense of causing serious bodily injuries resulting in an illness that poses a real threat to life is punishable by one to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The investigation is ongoing.
