It turned out that soot had caught fire in the chimney flue, while sparks and hot air coming from the chimney caused fire hotspots to develop on the thatched roof.
Before the crews arrived, the establishment’s staff were dousing the roof with water from a garden hose.
Firefighters secured the scene and cooled the roof surface with a stream of water. The temperature-damaged fan chimney exhaust was dismantled. The temperature was monitored with a thermal imaging camera.
