At the beginning of the year, headmaster Mirosław Sakowski signed an agreement with the Institute of Slavic Philology. The signing of the agreement was, among other things, the result of cooperation between the Second High School and Dr Gordana Durdev-Małkiewicz from the Institute of Slavic Philology, as well as the great commitment of teachers Barbara Sykulska and [the commitment] to saving from oblivion the history of Poles who came from the territories of the former Yugoslavia.
Thanks to this agreement, the high school students attended a lecture by Prof. Miłosza Bukwalta, who presented two topics. He spoke about philology as the art of the word and discussed contemporary Serbo-Croatian literature. “Working with texts means working with the culture and art of a given country,” the professor said. “I will tell the high school students how important the cultural context of a work is. A philologist should have full awareness of the word: know how to use it and what context to place it in. An exchange of words is an exchange of thoughts. I am troubled by today’s careless speech and haste. We speak quickly, a lot and carelessly. But words carry meaning,” Miłosz Bukwalt added.
The headmaster of II LO is seriously considering Serbian language lessons for those interested. “We are constantly expanding our offer so that the second high school is attractive to students,” says Mirosław Sakowski. “If so many students have Balkan roots, then enabling them to learn the language is, in my opinion, an excellent idea.”
