From the beginning of May through June 2 this year, 32 people have already drowned. To prevent relaxation from turning into tragedy, all it takes is following a few simple rules and taking common sense with you to the water as well.
Favorable weather, high temperatures and sunshine mean that we most enjoy relaxing by the water. However, a lake or the sea means not only relaxation and rest, but also numerous dangers. It is above all here that holidaymakers’ close attention and prudence matter. Overestimating one’s abilities while swimming and insufficient supervision of children can have tragic consequences. During summer trips and active recreation, tragedy is all too easy to encounter. The police remind us of the basic rules that apply when staying near lakes:
- we should swim only in supervised areas, and under no circumstances should we enter the water in prohibited places
- children should play near the water only under the watchful supervision of adults
- when entering the water with children, equip them with special arm bands or life jackets
- after lying in the sun for a long time, do not enter the water immediately; first, gradually wet your body. This will help us avoid thermal shock
- do not dive headfirst. The bottom of a natural body of water can change within a few days. However, if a spinal injury occurs while swimming, the most important thing is to transport the injured person carefully to the shore and be sure to check that their airways are clear. Call an ambulance immediately as well. Someone’s life may depend on our response
- leave air mattresses on the shore – do not use them to go out to the middle of the lake.
- never enter the water, even after drinking the smallest amount of alcohol.
Let us not forget to keep the place where we are relaxing tidy. Remember that thieves do not take a break during our holidays. Pay attention to the personal belongings we bring with us to the beach.
