The first gritters took to the streets at around 4:00 a.m. Critical locations in Legnica, namely viaducts, roundabouts and bridges, were treated. The first attack of winter this season was fairly mild. However, the services responsible for combating the effects of winter remain on standby around the clock. The streets are being patrolled. If, for example, black ice is detected, the appropriate equipment is immediately sent into action.

Let us recall that the Municipal Roads Authority entrusted winter road maintenance to the Legnickie Przedsiębiorstwo Gospodarki Komunalnej, which won the tender. The company prepared the necessary quantities of salt, sand and, of course, equipment. For combating the effects of winter, LPGK has stockpiled:

  • 1 000 tonnes of salt
  • 500 tonnes of sand
  • 500 tonnes of mixture (sand and salt)
  • 100 tonnes of so-called crushed sand.

If these reserves run out, they will be replenished. A dozen or so units of specialised road equipment are on standby, as well as a brine-production station, a weather station and communications equipment. Several dozen employees have been involved in “Operation Winter”. LPGK will also handle winter maintenance of pedestrian overpasses, underpasses, bridges and bus stops. Maintenance of the Market Square surface was entrusted to the “Ekolog” Greenery Protection Plant.

In Legnica, approximately 130 kilometres of roads have been designated for winter maintenance. Four maintenance standards apply. The most important locations, which are always cleared of snow first, are: the viaduct on Piłsudskiego Avenue, the viaduct on Wrocławska Street, Niepodległości Roundabout and the “hill” on Złotoryjska Street (on the section from Asnyka Street to Ceglana Street). These are key arteries for traffic safety, also because residents use them to commute to work.

Main roads (so-called Standard No. 2) are important for maintenance. These include all the main roads leading out of the city, the western bypass, the small bypass and streets served by public transport. Equipment takes to the roads when snow begins to fall. During snowfall, the passability of the most important transport routes is maintained. The Municipal Roads Authority decides when equipment is deployed.
