We have already reported on the blocked emergency access points on the A4 on December 1. After media reports were published on the matter, GDDKiA and the firefighters reached a compromise. On December 3, we received information from Michał Radoszka that the Wrocław branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways “after consultations with the Voivodeship Headquarters of the State Fire Service and arrangements with the contractor carrying out work on the relevant section of the motorway, will take additional measures to facilitate the removal of barriers at emergency exits.”
On December 10, firefighters from Nowogrodziec announced on their Facebook profile that GDDKiA had changed the barriers’ mounting from bolts to wedges. According to the firefighters, removing the barrier takes 4 minutes. The time needed to reinstall it must also be added. This is how much longer it will take to reach those injured. However, the biggest problem will arise when the emergency access point is used by the police or an ambulance service. In the firefighters’ view, it is impossible for a woman, an emergency doctor, or a female police officer to knock out these wedges with a 3-kilogram hammer.
