– We are pleased that, thanks to the financial support of our local government, a modern safety system is being built in the Legnica subregion – emphasized Tadeusz Krzakowski during the ceremony handing over the vehicle to the firefighters.

The new fire engine is equipped with a 3,000-litre tank. It can also be used to deal with chemical contamination. It will replace an older-generation vehicle, which will be handed over to the Volunteer Fire Service.

– This is a first-response vehicle that reaches the scene of an incident fastest – explained Adam Konieczny, municipal commander of the State Fire Service in Legnica. – It faces 1,200 interventions a year. This purchase was made possible thanks to the support of local governments. We will show our gratitude by providing assistance to all residents.

The Mercedes cost PLN 750,000, of which the city of Legnica contributed PLN 200,000 and the Chojnów municipality PLN 50,000. The purchase was also supported by the Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

A pleasant highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of an award to Legnica firefighter Paweł Biszczak, also an outstanding athlete, for saving a person's life after his shift. The incident took place in July this year.

– While I was at the beach by Lake Lipie, I saw a man fall from the stairs at a restaurant – recalls Paweł Biszczak. – He hit his head and lost consciousness. I provided him with first aid before the ambulance arrived. Later, the man who had been rescued sent a letter of thanks to the headquarters. I have achieved many successes in sport, but I consider this effective assistance in saving a human life one of my most valuable successes.
