The incident occurred during the night of October 22–23. At around 1:50 a.m., police officers from Karpacz, who were patrolling Ściegny (Podgórzyn gmina), noticed thick smoke and flames coming from one of the buildings. They immediately alerted the fire service and began waking and evacuating the building’s residents.
The fire broke out in an annex of a multi-family building where, fortunately, no one lived (these were utility rooms where wood and coal were stored).
The police officers evacuated 16 people, including four children. No one was injured. Six fire service units from nearby towns fought the blaze. Thanks to the quick response of the police officers and firefighters, the fire did not spread to the residential building, which is home to seven families and houses the municipal library.
The cause of the fire is being determined.
