The incident took place in Jelenia Góra on 18 September at around 5:10 p.m. The men, aged 19 and 24, approached a woman and asked her for a cigarette. Then one of them asked whether the victim could lend him her mobile phone for a moment. He claimed that he had to make a call. When the woman handed him the phone, both suspects immediately fled.
The victim notified the police. Police officers from a bicycle patrol were on duty near the scene and arrested both suspects a few minutes later. The phone was returned to its owner.
The 24-year-old was taken into police custody. It turned out that he was also suspected of other offenses: the theft of power tools worth PLN 2,700 from a construction site and a break-in at an attic. In the latter case, the thief stole power tools as well as paintball guns and masks; the losses were estimated at PLN 4,000. The younger suspect was released after procedural activities had been completed.
The 24-year-old faces up to 10 years in prison.
