– It is worth remembering that when shopping online, we are still consumers and can pursue claims against a dishonest seller. An entrepreneur who sells goods or services online must also comply with the law in force in Poland. This also applies to entrepreneurs whose businesses are registered outside our country but who direct their offer to Polish consumers – says Wiesława Sulima, the district consumer ombudsman.

Before making an online purchase, it is worth checking the seller’s details and the reviews posted about them. If they do not include the company name, address or contact details, it is better to abandon the purchase. If we have already decided on a particular product or service, it is worth reading the contract and payment terms carefully. It sometimes happens that after making a purchase, we have to incur additional costs related to delivery, registration on the portal or even packaging. This information is usually written in fine print and placed where the consumer is unlikely to notice it. If we are unsure about the seller’s reliability, it is always better to choose payment on delivery.

– A distance sales contract, that is, for example, one concluded online, may be cancelled without incurring any costs or giving a reason within 10 days of the date it was signed. A significant change for consumers will soon take place in this regard. On 25 December, new regulations will come into force, under which the 10-day period for withdrawing from a contract will be extended to 14 days – adds Wiesława Sulima.
