In May, we reported that three students of the Second Secondary School (Anna Goleńska, Gabriela Zarzycka and Michał Stopyra)—together with Jacek Maj, who runs the School Sailing Club—took part in a voyage across the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Pogoria tall ship.
From June 13 to 22, five students of the Janusz Korczak Second Secondary School took part in a voyage across the Great Masurian Lakes, organized by the II Private Middle School named after Capt. Krzysztof Baranowski, an institution that cultivates sailing traditions.
The young sailors had the opportunity to visit, among other places, Mikołajki, Węgorzewo and Mamerki, where a complex of bunkers built by the Nazis is located, as well as see żubronie (a cross between a European bison and domestic cattle) and go swimming… in the water park at the Gołębiewski Hotel. “We visited all the more important ports,” says Michał Stopyra, who has been involved in sailing for nine years and, as he puts it, this was his third trip to the Masurian Lakes. “The weather was favorable. It was supposed to rain, but there was plenty of sunshine.”
They had no shortage of adventures. Sergiusz Janowski once jumped into the cold water with great dedication to moor the yacht. Another time, the anchor came loose. “When sailing, you have to treat this element with respect, but you must not be afraid of it either,” emphasizes Jacek Maj. “Besides, sailing is primarily supposed to be enjoyable. And that was the case for Bartek Sobolski, who felt the call of sailing on this very trip,” adds the head of the School Sailing Club. “It is a truly interesting sport that requires discipline,” Bartek admits.
“I am glad that the students at our school have the opportunity to continue and develop their passions,” says Mirosław Sakowski, head of II LO. “I thank Jacek Maj for creating the School Sailing Club at our secondary school. I hope this will make our students even more passionate about sailing.”
“And I would like to thank Michał Stopyra, who helped me a great deal in running the club,” adds Jacek Maj.
