At Municipal School Complex No. 3, children from Grades 1–3 took part in a superbly prepared event held as part of the “All of Poland Reads to Children” social campaign. The readers were: Kornel Filipowicz, forester Maria Moskaluk from the Bolesławiec Forest District, and our journalist Grażyna Hanaf. The guests read Joanna Papuzińska’s story from the book “Our Sorceress Mom”. The host was the headteacher of MZS No. 3, Irena Sikora-Kołodyńska.

Games and activities were also prepared for the children. Each group answered questions about the story they had heard, sang songs about mothers, presented slogan-poems, and overcame obstacles in sports competitions. The children had to rescue teddy bears from trouble, collect moons, and gather lettuce for a dinosaur.

Everyone joined in the fun during the chorus of “And I Prefer My Mom”. The classes earned points—flowers for their mothers—and enthusiastically completed successive tasks. The guests were thanked with cheers, applause and certificates, while the classes received commemorative certificates and sweets.

The entire event was prepared by teachers: Monika Grzyb, Małgorzata Oleś and Teresa Góra. School employees and Ms Ania from the secretariat also helped. The event was hosted by Monika Grzyb.

The aim of the event was to experience an adventure with a book, cooperate, and give the children joy and an opportunity to have fun. Children at Primary School No. 2 are eager to use the library, developing their imagination and curiosity.

A School Where People Read

Primary School No. 2 joined the “All of Poland Reads to Children” social campaign (SPCD) for the first time in 2010, while it has been organizing other reading initiatives for more than five years. Since then, the school has taken part in the CPCD campaign every year.

The teachers and school administration want to spark children’s interest in reading, so that students will enjoy borrowing and reading books from the library and their parents will also become involved in these activities.

The school regularly organizes events for large groups of children—between 30 and 260 pupils from Grades 0–3: “A Meeting with Fairy-Tale Characters”, World Teddy Bear Day, the May Fairy-Tale Meeting, and, in June, “Education Through Reading” for the youngest children.

For these events, children from all classes dress up as fairy-tale characters, bring teddy bears, create costume elements, meet characters from various fairy tales, stories and poems, and make artwork and posters, also using the library. During the meetings, they solve fairy-tale-related riddles, identify fairy tales, dance, present their own poems on fairy-tale themes, and above all listen to texts read by invited guests.

Last year, the readers included guests from the County Police Headquarters, the Municipal Police, the Municipal Public Library, journalists from Local Television, the SKO coordinator from PKO BP, a community nurse and the headteacher of MZS No. 3. The school hosted the Deputy Mayor of Bolesławiec, the Head of the Social Affairs Department, directors of MBP and MDK, and representatives of a military unit.

In addition, students take part in reading initiatives such as “In the World of the Moomins” and the Year-Round Reading Competition, organized by the MZS No. 3 librarian.

The numerous initiatives increase the involvement of students and their parents in school life and stimulate children’s reading activity. By using books, children develop their imagination and interests, learn more stories, expand their vocabulary, and develop educationally and socially; they also simply learn to enjoy the company of a book.

Those interested can find information about the reading initiatives on the school’s website, sp2bol.republika.pl.

For its reading activities, the school received distinctions from the ABCXXI CPCD Foundation in the competition for the best-run social campaign in the 2012/2013 school year.
