The tragedy occurred during the night of 17–18 May in Ocice (Bolesławiec Municipality). The 41-year-old Audi driver was driving across the entire width of the road and narrowly avoided hitting three pedestrians who were returning from a party. The young people recognised the dangerous driver and notified the police.

The 41-year-old parked the car on one of the properties. When officers arrived there, the driver was not in the vehicle. After some time, however, the officers received information that the man had driven away from the property, so they resumed their search.

A short while later, they spotted the vehicle, but it disappeared from their sight. The man crashed into a tree and died at the scene. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. One quarter of the car burned.

The 41-year-old did not have a driving licence. He was driving without wearing a seat belt. What is more, he had previously been convicted of drunk driving. An autopsy will determine whether he was also under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

As investigators emphasise, the tragedy did not occur as a result of a pursuit (we received this information from a Reader). The police officers did not activate either the audible or the visual signals.
