Spring is approaching, so the grass-burning season has begun. Over the course of two weeks, volunteers from the Volunteer Fire Service in Nowogrodziec have already responded eight times.
Spring grass burning is a real plague. Many people believe that it improves soil quality. The opposite is true: burning accelerates soil erosion and impoverishment. The flames destroy not only dry grass, but also root systems, flora, bacteria and fungi—in short, the entire richness of nature is destroyed.
What is more, burning grass is one of the most common causes of forest fires. Burning meadows also pose a threat to human settlements.
Firefighters remind the public: burning meadows, pastures, wasteland, ditches, roadside strips, railway lines, as well as reed beds and marsh vegetation, is illegal and punishable by arrest or a fine.
