– “40,101 people have submitted waste declarations. According to some data, Bolesławiec does not have that many residents,” said mayor Piotr Roman during the City Council session held on August 28. “This is a success, because many cities in Poland are struggling to collect declarations. We managed to do it despite the major difficulties associated with the very imprecise—putting it mildly—provisions of the law.”
Waste sorting was declared by 33,742 residents, while 6,359 do not intend to sort their waste.
Jak Bolesławiec radzi sobie z tzw. ustawą śmieciową?
Piotr Hetel, chairman of the Democratic Left Alliance councillors’ group and head of the “Bolesławianka” Housing Cooperative, spoke: “It would be good if sorted waste were collected more often, especially since so many people have submitted waste declarations. Perhaps we should also consider purchasing compactors so that more waste could fit into the containers?”
“There were certain things we could not have predicted,” Piotr Roman replied. “We could not have guessed how many people would declare that they sort their waste, nor that July would be so hot, which contributed to the increased number of plastic beverage bottles in the waste containers. What is more, residents of other municipalities are still bringing waste to Staszica [do PSZOK-u, czyli Punktu Selektywnej Zbiórki Opadów Komunalnych, który mieści się na terenie Miejskiego Zakładu Gospodarki Komunalnej – przyp. „ii”].
“The amount of sorted waste is more than twice as large as before. Residents have really taken sorting seriously. But there have been no cases of any location being completely buried in waste, because we respond immediately in such situations,” the mayor continued. “There are many more problems, but we will resolve them gradually.”
Jarosław Kowalski, head of the Forum councillors’ group and MZGK director for investment and environmental protection, also joined the discussion: “We collect waste more often from locations where we receive reports that the containers are already overflowing. We cannot collect waste every day from all 200 locations.”
Kowalski confirmed that residents of other municipalities are trying to dispose of waste at the PSZOK operated by MZGK Bolesławiec. “We do not allow this, because every municipality is required to establish such a facility,” he added.
We will return to this matter.
