A concerned resident informed us about what the renovation of streets in the city centre looks like on a daily basis.

“This is an unsecured construction site,” the man said in a telephone conversation. “Anyone can drive through these streets under renovation at a speed of 50 km/h because there are no visible restrictions. There is also no information about where pedestrians can walk. If an ambulance or fire engine had to travel that way, it would be a serious problem. Heavy equipment drives along the streets, workers are walking around, and sand and gravel are stored on the road. Cars drive and people walk among all this. It is irresponsible and, above all, dangerous,” the man added.

The spokeswoman for the County Office explains that the streets were not closed in order to make it easier for people to move around the city and reach their properties.

“Even during the major renovation that involved the construction of Żwirki i Wigury Street, we did not close it entirely,” says Katarzyna Biegasiewicz. “According to the County Roads Authority, the modernisation of Bielska and Tyrankiewiczów streets is being carried out in accordance with the traffic-management plan. The plan was approved by all safety services,” the spokeswoman explains.

Katarzyna Biegasiwiecz also emphasises that the County Office approached the modernisation of these roads sensibly and with residents in mind. “Work in the very centre of the city is an inconvenience for the residents of Bolesławiec, and we have apologised to residents for it many times,” the spokeswoman says.

The spokeswoman also corrects the reader’s information concerning the speed limit. Signs limiting the speed to 20 km/h have been installed along the road under renovation.

“The renovation of this section will continue until 31 October 2013,” says Biegasiewicz. “Our priority is to have all pavements completed before 1 September. We are putting strong pressure on the contractor to meet this deadline before the first day of school.”
