One of the threats to the Company’s business activity is the risk associated with the consequences arising from the energy and climate package adopted in 2008. It is a scenario for the European Union’s energy policy. The 3x20 package defined the basic objectives that EU countries should meet by 2020: reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, increasing the share of renewable energy by 20%, and saving 20% in energy consumption.
The point concerning the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is particularly dangerous for the Company and its Customers.
Stop the package
Studies prepared by experts show that implementing the climate and energy package may lead to a sharp increase in electricity and heating prices. The Polish economy may also lose several hundred thousand jobs, mainly in so-called energy-intensive industries, because these industries will move their production to countries outside the European Union, where the package does not apply.
As reported by Reuters in July 2012, citing the latest report prepared by the European Commission, global CO2 emissions increased by 3 percent in 2011 compared with the previous year, reaching 34 billion tonnes. According to the report, China’s carbon dioxide emissions increased by a billion tonnes (+9 percent) in 2011, reaching 9.7 billion tonnes. China surpassed the United States in terms of CO2 emissions and is now responsible for 29 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. The Americans’ share of global emissions is 16 percent, the European Union emits 11 percent of CO2, India 6 percent, Russia 5 percent, and Japan 4 percent.
The report cited above merely confirms that the European Union’s fight to limit CO2 emissions is a fight against windmills. The experiments and whims of EU politicians should be ended as soon as possible. Otherwise, Poland will suffer irreversible economic damage, and every resident of our country will have to pay out of their own pocket for the ideas of these mad experimenters, because electricity and home heating will become more expensive.
The impact of rising carbon dioxide emissions on climate warming – facts or myths?
In its position statement, the Committee of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences states that geological research conclusively shows that constant variability is the fundamental characteristic of Earth’s climate throughout its history, and that changes occur in overlapping cycles of varying lengths – from several hundred thousand years to several years.
For twelve thousand years, Earth has been in another phase of cyclical warming and is near its maximum intensity. Periodic increases in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, sometimes reaching values several times higher than at present, accompanied earlier warming periods, including those before humans appeared on Earth.
Political decisions based on an incomplete set of data may also be wrong. Under such conditions, it is easy for lobbying by sellers of so-called ecological energy technologies or CO2 storage in already exhausted deposits, dressed up in political correctness, to take hold.
The late Prof. Zbigniew Jaworowski, MD, a physician, radiologist and mountaineer, who died in 2011, was a sceptic regarding the impact of human activity on global warming. In one of many articles devoted to the human impact on the climate, he wrote: “In my opinion, humans have little influence on the climate, if any.
The most important greenhouse gas, which the press generally does not mention at all, is not carbon dioxide, which we release by burning coal, oil and gas, as well as from other human sources – it is water, ordinary water vapour, which produces about 97% of the entire greenhouse effect. This greenhouse effect is a blessing, just as CO2 is a blessing. CO2 – carbon dioxide – is the gas of life.”
“Global warming is a trillion-dollar-driven scam that has corrupted many scientists,” wrote Professor Harold Lewis in a letter to the president of the American Physical Society (APS), in which the scholar resigned his membership in the organisation. “It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. My former pride in belonging to the APS throughout all those years has turned into shame,” Prof. Lewis continued. APS is the world’s second-largest organisation of physicists, after the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.
“It has not been scientifically proven that global climate warming is the result of human activity. In this light, efforts to reduce CO2 emissions on a global scale have no justification and may contribute to slowing the development of civilisation.”
European Citizens’ Initiative
In September 2012, a campaign was launched to collect signatures for suspending the climate and energy package that was unfavourable to Poland. The initiative’s aim is to collect at least one million signatures in at least seven EU countries within a year, in order to initiate before the European Commission a procedure to suspend the climate and energy package that is harmful to our economy and to other European economies. Representatives from seven European Union countries are participating in the initiative: Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom.
Poland is entitled to free CO2 emission allowances, which will be gradually reduced between 2013 and 2026. Industrial plants will have to purchase the missing allowances at special auctions or on the stock exchange. Purchasing the missing CO2 emission allowances will cause a drastic increase in production costs – ultimately, the citizen will pay for the European Union’s whims, with Polish citizens paying the most because our energy sector is based primarily on coal. From 2027, all Polish heating plants and all Polish power plants will have to purchase all emission allowances because free allowances will no longer be available. This will cause a drastic increase in electricity and heating prices, estimated at 60–80%. Stop the foolishness, stop.
Do not delay. You are acting in your own best interest. Submit your signature supporting the initiative. Save your finances. Signed declarations can be sent to NSZZ “S” in Katowice, to “S” in Bolesławiec, or delivered to ZEC in Bolesławiec.
