Concentration problems, drowsiness, constantly checking email… If we add neglecting our responsibilities and relationships with friends in favor of the Internet, these may already be serious signs that we are losing control over the time we spend online. Excessive Internet use is becoming an extremely serious social problem today. Children and young people are particularly at risk of addiction, for whom the Internet is an inseparable element of their everyday activity, social life and entertainment.
At GS No. 2 in Bolesławiec, as part of the “Let’s Live in Reality, Not Virtually” project, classes on Internet and computer addiction were held. Second-year students from five classes took part. The young people completed Dr Kimberly Young’s tests, which showed that 8% of those surveyed were addicted to the Internet, while 68% were on the verge of addiction.
The effects and causes of Internet and computer addiction were presented during the classes. The following activities also took place:
- discussions about addiction
- interactive scenes involving students
- brainstorming.
Class teachers also took part in the classes.
