In May, we wrote that Prusa Street had been opened to car traffic. We added that the new traffic arrangements resulted from consultations between the mayor of Bolesławiec and the entrepreneurs who run their shops and businesses on Prusa Street. To reduce disruption for residents of nearby houses, motor traffic is permitted there only on weekdays, during business hours.
The decision sparked considerable controversy among the residents of Bolesławiec, as evidenced, among other things, by posts on our forum. Heniu wrote: “This is the biggest stupidity anyone could have come up with! The prettiest avenue in the city—and they disfigure it with cars—congratulations on the idea! Where do such people come from, people who have ideas like this?!” bari agreed: “A prize for the mayor in the field of innovation and ecology. No one else in the world would have thought of such an idiotic idea—to harm the city and its residents. The representative pedestrian promenade has been turned into a rodeo venue.”
However, as we can read on the city hall’s website, the owners and tenants of premises on Prusa Street are pleased with the city authorities’ decision. The document addressed to the mayor and the City Council members states:
This decision will undoubtedly improve the difficult situation of retailers and service providers as a result of increased traffic and, consequently, a larger number of potential customers. It will make it possible to rent commercial premises that had remained vacant for a long time. The positive aspects of this decision can already be seen—there is greater interest in the vacant premises. So far, no inconvenience related to opening the street to car traffic or disturbance to residents’ peace and quiet has been observed.
We hope that everyone involved in this matter will show a little goodwill and understanding, since no one would be happy if Bolesław Prus Street became a dead pedestrian promenade with vacant premises. Thank you for your support in this matter.
