The youngest lovers of theatre, preschoolers and pupils in grades 1–3, watched one of the most beautiful and best-known fairy tales: “Sleeping Beauty”. The story, based on fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Perrault, inspires sensitivity and faith in the power of love in its viewers. The story presented in the performance had a universal dimension: it was a story about struggling with fate and growing up in a world of prohibitions and orders. The performance positively supports the development of sensitivity, patience and perseverance in children as they pursue their goals.
“Sleeping Beauty” is a play enriched with numerous songs and beautiful costumes. It transported the children into a world of fantasy while also making the young viewers co-creators of a living story.
Pupils in grades 4–6 watched an adaptation of Antonina Domańska’s historical novel “The Story of the Yellow Slipper”. During conservation work on the High Altar in St. Mary’s Basilica, a small yellow slipper is found. To discover where it came from, the viewers, guided by the actors, travelled back several centuries to the times of King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk. The performance told the story of the talented boy Wawrzek Skowronek, who left his family home to fulfil his dreams and become a pupil of the world-famous master sculptor Wit Stwosz.
During his journey, the boy encountered many obstacles and faced a bandit known as Czarny Rafał. At last, he reached Kraków and became Master Stwosz’s assistant. The main character is a positive example for young people and a valuable lesson teaching that it is worth dreaming and making one’s dreams come true.
