A ceremonial gala summarizing the “Water Is the Source of Life: PWiK on Water, Wastewater and Green Energy” campaign was held at the Municipal Culture and Sports Centre in Kruszyn. The campaign was aimed at third-grade pupils from primary schools in the Bolesławiec municipality and included classes held in April at facilities belonging to PWiK in Bolesławiec, as well as a competition in May testing the knowledge they had acquired.

Around one hundred third-graders from eight municipal primary schools took part in the April classes, which included a visit to the “Modłowa” water intake and the wastewater treatment plant in Bolesławiec. During the classes, the children learned where the water in their taps comes from, how it is produced and treated, and why Bolesławiec’s water can be drunk straight from the tap.

At the wastewater treatment plant, the participants learned what wastewater is, how it is treated, and how fertilizer and green, environmentally friendly energy can be produced from it. Experiments and a multimedia presentation were prepared to encourage the potential young engineers to take an active part, and each participant received a small gift.

The knowledge acquired during the field classes made it possible to select three representatives from each school, who competed in the municipal competition on 23 May this year.

The competition was extremely fierce, and the 24 young participants demonstrated knowledge at the highest level. Three ranked places were awarded, and their winners received attractive prizes.

First place, with the maximum possible score, went to Amadeusz Kujawa from the Primary School in Dąbrowa Bolesławiecka. Second place went to Sophie Górzańska from the Primary School in Trzebień. Third place went to Wiktor Tomanik, also a representative of the Primary School in Trzebień.

The ceremonial gala, during which each of the 24 competition participants received a certificate and a prize for taking part, was attended by Józef Król, president of the Management Board of PWiK in Bolesławiec and the campaign’s main initiator. The president took part in all meetings with the participants, presenting them with the history and present-day operations of Bolesławiec’s water and sewerage services.

Also present at the gala were Roman Jaworski, deputy head of the Bolesławiec municipality, Grzegorz Kozłowski, technical director at PWiK, as well as headteachers and female teachers from the schools taking part in the competition.

The main organizer of the campaign was PWiK in Bolesławiec. The competition was co-financed by the Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Wrocław. The honorary patronage of the campaign was assumed by the head of the Bolesławiec municipality, Andrzej Dutkowski.
