At the upcoming session of the Bolesławiec City Council, to be held on 24 April, councillors will adopt—or not—a resolution “on placing a commemorative plaque on the Kresowiacy Monument.” If the legal act comes into force, a plaque commemorating the 68th anniversary of the return of people from the Eastern Borderlands from Siberia will be installed on the monument located at Wolności Square. The plaque will be funded by the Bolesławiec branch of the Związek Sybiraków.
The justification for the draft resolution states:
The Kresowiacy Monument was erected in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first railway transport carrying Poles resettled from the Eastern Borderlands—Drohobych Land. The foundation act for the unveiling of the monument took place on 17 September 1995. The monument was constructed in the form of a stark obelisk, symbolizing hard work, perseverance, service to the Homeland and great patriotism. It was meant to be simple and austere, like the fate of the resettled people. It was intended to recall the suffering, humiliation and pain caused by the loss of loved ones, and to attest to historical truth.
On 20 April 1996, a second plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Yugoslavian Polonia in Bolesławiec was placed on the monument. On 30 April 2004, another plaque commemorating the arrival of repatriates from France was added.
The commemorative plaque of the “Związek Sybiraków” branch, commemorating the 68th anniversary of the return from Siberia, will be the fourth and final plaque, thereby completing all activities connected with the Kresowiacy Monument.
