Those responsible for maintaining roads and pavements

Winter weather can cause a range of difficulties for road and pedestrian traffic resulting from inadequate maintenance of roads, pavements and properties located in their vicinity. It is therefore worth recalling that the road authority’s responsibilities include, among other things, maintaining both the road surface and pavements.

In addition to road authorities, property owners are also required to independently take care of maintaining the pavement, specifically the section directly adjoining the property. Property owners are obliged to clear mud, snow, ice, sand and other contaminants from the pavement located directly along the property boundary. This obligation must be fulfilled often enough to ensure the safety of people using the pavement. Sand remaining after winter maintenance operations must be removed immediately once the reason for its use has ceased. Mud, snow, ice and sand must be stored in a way that does not obstruct pedestrian or vehicle traffic.

If a property is developed with multi-unit buildings in which separate ownership of the units has been established, the property owner’s obligations rest with the persons managing the common property – housing communities.
