This year marks the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising. The largest Polish national uprising broke out on January 22, 1863, in the Kingdom of Poland, and on February 1, 1863, in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The uprising was directed against the Russian Empire and took the form of guerrilla warfare.

Bolesławiec Municipal Lower Secondary School No. 2 is carrying out an educational project aimed at engaging students with the past, developing historical imagination and patriotic attitudes. On January 22, delegations of students from all primary and lower secondary schools in Bolesławiec:

  • will take part in classes based on a scenario developed by history teachers
  • will listen to a lecture by Dr Joanna Nowosielska-Sobel from the Faculty of Historical Sciences at the University of Wrocław
  • will see authentic uprising memorabilia from the family collections of Maria Sobolska and Zdzisław Abramowicz
  • will witness the oath-taking ceremony of members of the Historical Society of Polish Cavalry Enthusiasts named after the 6th Kaniow Uhlan Regiment
  • will eat “partisan pea soup.”

That day at 11:30 a.m. a formal summary of the project will take place with the participation of the authorities of the city and Bolesławiec Municipality. During the ceremony, the play “Images of Memory,” inspired by paintings by artists from the period of the January Uprising, will be presented.
