Brunon Jasieński’s “The Mannequins’ Ball” is a play written in the 1930s. In it, the author asks whether revolutionaries are capable of introducing any constructive changes or whether they fight only for their own benefit. And whether those who rule and those who are ruled are groups that differ so greatly.
The production was directed by Adam Opatowicz. For the production, the director invited Adam Zieliński and Andrzej Mikosz, namely rapper Łona (ranked sixteenth on the list of the 30 best Polish rappers according to “Machina” magazine) and composer Webber.
Introducing hip-hop lyrics by Łona and Webber into “The Mannequins’ Ball” made it possible to update the play and highlight the timelessness of Jasieński’s message. Critics write about the excellent choreography by Paulina Andrzejewska and the interesting set design by Mariusz Napierała. They also praise the actor – Filip Cembala – who raps the master of ceremonies in both stage balls.
The play begins at night at the titular ball, where mannequins (tailors’ and display mannequins), forgetting the immobility that accompanies them every day, lose themselves in dance. This intoxicating revelry is interrupted by the arrival of a female mannequin, followed by a man who, convinced that he is following a beautiful woman, is recognized by another mannequin as a member of parliament and the leader of one of the parties. This is the starting point of a play that in fact turns out to be a metaphorical story depicting the mechanisms of power and the path leading to revolution.
