The matter was brought to councillors' attention during a City Council session held on 1 February by Bolesławiec Mayor Piotr Roman. “We received information from the District Prosecutor's Office in Jelenia Góra that the director of the Wrocław branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways had asked the head of GDDKiA to include in the national road construction programme for 2011–2015 a project called ‘Reconstruction of the transport system on national road no. 94, including the reconstruction of the bridge over the Bóbr River in Bolesławiec,’” Roman said. “It is amusing that we received this information from the prosecutor's office. Recently, it is precisely the prosecutor's office that has been contributing to improving the condition of the roads.”

In 2005, the mayor noted, the average daily traffic on this bridge was more than 14,500 vehicles. In 2010, traffic fell to approximately 8,000 vehicles per day, while traffic volume on the A4 motorway reached nearly 11,800 vehicles per day. “These figures show that fewer vehicles currently use the motorway than crossed the Bolesławiec bridge in 2005,” he stressed.

“Rebuilding this bridge is very important. Once motorway tolls are introduced, no sensible person will pay PLN 10 to get to Zgorzelec or PLN 20 to reach Wrocław,” Piotr Roman argued. “This means that at least 50% of the cars currently using the motorway will join the 8,000 vehicles that cross our bridge each day. We will have a situation similar to the one that existed in 2005.”

We will return to this matter.
