Piotr Roman, mayor of Bolesławiec, wants the direct railway connection on the Warsaw–Zgorzelec route to be restored. To this end, he appealed to the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Maritime Economy. “The elimination of the direct connection between south-western Poland and the capital deprives nearly one million residents of the opportunity to use this infrastructure. Was the line modernized at a cost of hundreds of millions of euros so that rail buses could run here?” the mayor argued. “Several years of efforts and negotiations with PKP PLK and the carriers have not restored the direct connection between Zgorzelec, Bolesławiec and Legnica and Warsaw.

The ministry replied that, according to information provided by PKP Intercity, there are currently no technical possibilities for launching trains on these routes. However, the company declares that it is ready to launch a direct Legnica–Warsaw connection in December 2012. “Extending the route of a train running to Wrocław to Legnica involves additional costs for commissioning external entities to handle the servicing of the trainset, while extending the route to Zgorzelec would require trains to be operated with diesel traction, and the company does not have locomotives for this purpose in the area,” Andrzej Massel, undersecretary of state at the ministry, informed us.
