The competition was held in two categories: pairs and singles. As might easily be guessed, this referred to the number of horses pulling the plough. "Each competitor had to plough four ares of land," explains Dariusz Michalski, the tournament's originator and main organiser. The jury did not consider the time spent ploughing, but rather the accuracy of the work. Almost all the tournament participants performed their task very well. Therefore, the jury had difficulty selecting the winners.
After lengthy deliberations, the judges agreed that the Golden Ploughshare in the pairs category should go to Andrzej Lipowy from Bukowiec, near Gorzów Wielkopolski. He also received a several-month-old foal as a prize. First place in the singles category was awarded to Jan Kawałko from Gościszów. The ploughmen's competition ended with a demonstration of ploughing with three horses. Keeping three animals under control is not easy. Stanisław Hora from Szprotawa demonstrated this skill.
In addition to the ploughing competition, many other attractions were prepared for the public. Visitors could see historic horse-drawn carriages and coaches, as well as a show of jumping over obstacles. Musical groups and cabarets performed on stage, and Saturday's events ended with a folk dance. On Sunday, there were performances by equestrian groups and races for Linker horses, bareback races, and a race for the mayor's cup. The public could also watch competitions testing carriage-driving skills and equestrian agility.
The National Horse Ploughing Tournament in Ocice was the idea of Dariusz Michalski. At his urging, the villagers joined in organising the event. The residents themselves renovated and cleaned the village. They cut down bushes that had overgrown the roadside verges for years, planted flowers, and swept the pavements and streets. The Gminny Ośrodek Kultury i Sportu helped the residents only with organising the artistic programme. "Now we have to do everything to ensure that the 3rd International Polish Horse Ploughing Championships are held in Ocice next year," says Dariusz Michalski. "It's a great event," admits Krzysztof Wójcik, head of the Dolnośląski Związek Hodowców Koni. "I have to take my hat off to the organisers. You can see that they put a great deal of work and heart into the preparations. It is worth continuing, especially since there are no similar events in Poland," adds Krzysztof Wójcik.
