The District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica has launched an investigation against 58-year-old Dariusz S., suspected of causing his wife’s death. The tragedy occurred on Sunday after another marital argument.
Investigators determined that the couple, who had been together for more than 30 years, had a tendency to abuse alcohol. They drank both on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning. During another argument, the man, under the influence of ethanol, took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his wife in the thigh. The woman was lying on the bed at the time.
The blow severed the popliteal artery. His wife died very quickly from blood loss. She had no other injuries on her body.
After the incident, he tried to clean the apartment
The man initially tried to clean the apartment and covered his wife’s body with a blanket. At around 2 p.m., he called a family member and reported that the woman was dead. However, he claimed that he had done nothing to her.
Then… he left the house and went to a friend’s place. Emergency medical responders who arrived at the scene pronounced the woman dead. The 58-year-old was detained at around 3 p.m. He was intoxicated — testing showed between 1.19 and 1.03 mg of alcohol per liter of exhaled air.
He admitted to the alleged offense
On Monday, October 12, 2026 — after sobering up — Dariusz S. was brought to the prosecutor’s office. He was charged with intentionally stabbing his wife with a knife and causing her serious bodily harm in the form of an illness posing a real threat to her life, which resulted in the woman’s death.
The suspect admitted to the alleged offense and gave an explanation. However, he could not explain why he had done it.
He claimed that he had tried to stop the bleeding with an undershirt, but the blood was spurting so forcefully that his efforts had no effect. He also admitted that after drinking alcohol he sometimes lost control of himself and that the police often intervened at their home. He expressed remorse for what he had done.
The court ordered three months of pre-trial detention
On October 12, the prosecutor filed a motion with the court to place the suspect in temporary detention for three months. The motion was justified by concern that he might obstruct the proceedings, citing the man’s initial denial that he had committed the alleged offense. The prosecutor also pointed to the risk that the suspect might go into hiding to evade justice because of the severe punishment he faces.
The court granted the prosecutor’s motion and ordered the 58-year-old held in temporary detention for three months.
For the alleged offense, which resulted in the woman’s death, the suspect faces a sentence of between 5 and 30 years in prison or life imprisonment.
Dariusz S. is a disability pensioner and has primary education. His wife also received a disability pension but additionally worked as a security guard.
