On Saturday, September 26, the fifth edition of the Görlitz–Zgorzelec Equality March took place. This year’s slogan was “love::united”. The organizers said that the march was intended to increase the visibility of queer people and express support for equality and acceptance.
According to data provided by German police, around 750 people took part in the procession. The route was approximately four kilometers long and ran through Zgorzelec and Görlitz. The event program also included an opening rally and the “Diversity Picnic” at Obermarkt in Görlitz, where speeches, music and organization stalls were planned.
A registered counterdemonstration also took place, with around 65 participants, according to police. Police assessed the course of the gatherings as mostly peaceful. At the same time, they reported proceedings involving three march participants and the identification of seven violations during the counterdemonstration. Proceedings are being conducted against one counterdemonstration participant in connection with suspected incitement to hatred. This is information about suspicions, not established guilt on the part of these people.
The march organized on both sides of the Lusatian Neisse is part of Christopher Street Day. This year’s edition was the fifth in Zgorzelec and Görlitz.
