A truck crashed into a building on Mickiewicza Street in Jawor. The rescue operation, which began on Thursday around noon, turned out to be much more complicated. After the driver was freed firefighters still had to secure the seriously compromised structure of the building and only then could they begin removing the vehicle.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, at approximately 12:00 p.m. The truck hit a building on Mickiewicza Street in Jawor. The cab literally crashed into the building.
Only the driver was traveling in the vehicle. The impact severely deformed the cab, and the man became trapped inside it.
Firefighters spent about an hour freeing the driver
In the first phase of the operation, the priority was to reach the injured man and remove him from the cab as quickly as possible. Among other equipment, firefighters used hydraulic tools and cutting equipment. At the same time, they partially cleared rubble from the garage.
After about an hour of intensive work, the driver was freed from the vehicle. Firefighters evacuated him to a safe location and handed him over to the State Emergency Medical Rescue team from Jawor. The man was then taken to hospital.
A Ratownik 13 helicopter of the Polish Medical Air Rescue service from Wrocław also landed at the scene.
The truck damaged the building’s structure
Freeing the driver did not mean the operation was over. The force of the impact seriously compromised the building’s structure. Before rescuers could remove the truck, the building had to be properly secured and stabilized.
These operations were carried out by rescuers from the Specialist Search and Rescue Group Wałbrzych-1. Only after the necessary safeguards had been put in place did the specialist technical rescue groups begin work.
Specialist Technical Rescue Groups from Bolesławiec and Wrocław took part in pulling the wrecked vehicle beyond the building’s outline.
17 units and 47 firefighters
The scale of the operation was considerable. In total, 17 units and 47 firefighters took part in the operation.
The police are determining the causes and circumstances of the incident.
