Google Maps also confirms that Polmozbyt on Kubika Street is closed, displaying the message “Permanently closed” next to the business. The automotive store was the last part to close. It operated until September 7.

This is certainly the end of an era in Bolesławiec’s history. For several decades, the site on Kubika Street was associated with motoring. Generations of drivers used it and knew it.

It was a distinctive feature of Bolesławiec’s motoring landscape as far back as the days of the Polish People’s Republic. “Polmozbyt” operated here—a company involved, among other things, in servicing and selling cars and automotive parts.

For older residents, this place remains a reminder of an entirely different motoring era. Before that, TOS operated here, short for Techniczna Obsługa Samochodów (Technical Vehicle Service). During the Polish People’s Republic, TOS facilities formed a nationwide network of state-run workshops and vehicle service stations. In later years, as Poland’s automotive sector underwent structural changes, the Bolesławiec branch—like many other TOS stations across the country—was incorporated into Polmozbyt.

Polonezes, large Fiats and small Fiats—known as “maluchy”—were repaired here, but they were not the only icons of motoring during the Polish People’s Republic to pass through the workshop. Other vehicles were repaired here as well.

Over the following years, the nature of the business changed, but the site on Kubika Street continued to serve drivers. It was possible to have a car repaired, undergo a technical inspection, or buy automotive parts and accessories there. The yard also served as a parking area.

Today, the doors and gate are closed, no one answers the phone, and the company that operated for years is becoming part of history. The site left by “Polmozbyt” will certainly be redeveloped soon. What will be built there will become clear before long. It is worth noting that the land does not belong to the city.

Do you remember this place?

Did you use the services of TOS, the later “Polmozbyt,” or the service station and automotive store that operated here in recent years? What do you remember most? What associations do you have with this place?

Write in the comments. We would be happy to recall the history of a place that was part of Bolesławiec’s motoring scene for several decades.
