A tragic accident occurred on Sunday, 23 August, before 9:00 p.m., on Zgorzelecka Street in Zawidów. The 32-year-old driver of a Škoda Octavia hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road outside a pedestrian crossing. The 61-year-old man died at the scene despite receiving assistance.
Police officers conducted activities in the case under the supervision of a prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec. An expert in the reconstruction of road accidents also participated in the proceedings. Officers carried out an inspection and secured evidence that should help establish the course of the incident in detail.
The investigation conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec has produced further findings concerning the circumstances of the accident.
According to investigators, the 32-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County deliberately violated road safety rules. While driving the Škoda, he grossly exceeded the maximum speed limit applicable in a built-up area and then hit a pedestrian crossing the road outside a pedestrian crossing.
But this is not the end of the charges against the driver. The man drove the car despite an active court ban on driving motor vehicles. The ban, imposed by the District Court in Zgorzelec, also for driving while intoxicated, remains in force until 26 November 2026.
After the 32-year-old was arrested, police officers conducted a sobriety test. It showed 1.16 per mille of alcohol in his system. A blood sample was also taken from the man to test for prohibited substances.
The suspect was brought before the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec. He confessed to the alleged offences and gave explanations. He had previously been convicted of similar crimes.
At the investigators’ request, the court ordered three months’ pre-trial detention for the 32-year-old. The man faces up to 20 years in prison.
