The incident occurred on 6 August 2026, at around 11:40 p.m.. Police officers from the Police Station in Szklarska Poręba were notified about a situation at one of the hotels.

The officers went to the indicated address to check whether the children were receiving proper care. After entering the hotel room, they found a 37-year-old resident of Łódź Voivodeship. The man was in a state of considerable alcohol intoxication.

The police established that he had come to Szklarska Poręba with his two minor daughters for a holiday in the mountains. A breathalyzer test showed nearly 2 promille of alcohol in his system.

The children were placed in their mother’s care

In this situation, the officers first ensured the minors’ safety. The children were handed over to their mother.

The 37-year-old, meanwhile, was detained and taken to a police detention facility. He was to sober up there and remain until further procedures had been carried out.

After sobering up, the man was charged with exposing his minor daughters to the direct danger of loss of life or health.

The police classified the case under Article 160, paragraph 2, of the Criminal Code. This type of offense carries a possible sentence of up to 5 years’ imprisonment. The family court was also notified of the situation. It will make decisions within its jurisdiction.

Police: alcohol and childcare are a dangerous combination

Officers remind the public that caring for a child requires constant readiness to respond to situations that may threaten the child’s health or life. An intoxicated parent may be unable to properly assess a danger, respond appropriately to an unforeseen event or provide the child with the necessary assistance in time.

A holiday trip, a stay in the mountains or an overnight stay at a hotel does not release parents from their duty to ensure their children’s safety. As the officers emphasize, responsible care requires, above all, sobriety, prudence and readiness to respond appropriately.

If there is a suspicion that a child’s health or life may be at risk, police officers intervene, with the primary objective of ensuring the minors’ safety and proper care.
