The June session of the Bolesławiec City Council is under way. The mayor informed councillors about a recent study visit by local government representatives to Chełm. In addition to presentations of local investments, the organization of public transport in other Polish cities was also discussed. The solution used in Radomsko attracted particular attention.
As explained during the session, that model is not based on completely free public transport for all passengers. Free travel is available to residents who use a special identification system—a solution similar to a resident card. People from outside the city still have to buy tickets.
Interestingly, the Radomsko mechanism has an additional financial component. A neighboring municipality that wants to provide its residents with free travel contributes to maintaining the system by settling transport costs according to the number of vehicle-kilometres operated. As a result, residents of that local government can also use the services without additional fees.
The Bolesławiec authorities emphasize, however, that there is currently no decision to implement a similar model. A working visit and an analysis of how the system operates in practice have nevertheless been announced.
