Gale-force winds after a hot day. Numerous reports across the region
Saturday afternoon, June 20, brought the deterioration in weather that forecasters had expected since the early morning hours. After an exceptionally hot and humid day, when thermometers in Bolesławiec County showed as much as 37 degrees Celsius in the shade, a front with gusty winds moved over the region.
Since 4:00 p.m., firefighters from the State Fire Service and nearby Volunteer Fire Service units (OSP) have been working nonstop throughout the county. Strong gusts damaged numerous trees—broken branches and entire trunks blocked several local and voivodeship roads, posing a direct threat to drivers.
Where is the situation most difficult?
Reports are coming in from virtually every municipality in Bolesławiec County. Rescuers’ efforts are focused primarily on:
- Removing fallen trees blocking passage on routes between smaller localities,
- Securing broken branches that could fall onto parked cars and pavements,
- Clearing transport routes to ensure smooth passage for emergency services.
At present, there is no official information about injured people or serious damage to residential buildings. However, the services are urging residents to exercise caution, secure items on balconies and in yards, and, if possible, avoid parking cars under trees.
IMGW warns: the storms and heat are not over yet
The Voivodeship Crisis Management Center and IMGW remind residents that second-degree weather warnings remain in effect for Bolesławiec County. The storm front may continue moving across the region until late at night.
IMGW statement: Thunderstorms are forecast, locally accompanied by very heavy rainfall and wind gusts reaching 80–90 km/h in storm areas, and locally up to 100 km/h. Hail is also possible in some areas.
At the same time, an alert concerning extreme heat remains in effect. High temperatures are expected to persist in the region on Sunday as well, which, combined with high humidity after the storms, may create very muggy and oppressive weather conditions. The situation on the county’s roads is being continuously monitored by Bolesławiec emergency services.
