On May 27, a dangerous discovery was made on Kilińskiego Street in Szklarska Poręba. A woman out walking noticed an object partially protruding from a mountain stream that resembled an artillery shell. She immediately notified the services.

Police officers from Jelenia Góra were dispatched to the scene and secured the area until the arrival of bomb-disposal specialists from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment in Bolesławiec. The dangerous artifact was handled by officers from the City of Ceramics.

As officers emphasize, although many decades have passed since the end of World War II, unexploded ordnance and misfired ammunition are still regularly found in Lower Silesia. Such objects can be deadly even after lying in the ground or water for many years.

Police remind the public that if suspicious objects are found, they must not under any circumstances be touched, moved or disarmed. Any careless action may lead to an explosion and tragedy.

The services urge people in similar situations to immediately notify the Police and move away to a safe distance. The responsible response of the person who noticed the shell in Szklarska Poręba helped avoid a potential threat to residents and tourists.

The most important safety rules:

  • do not touch unexploded ordnance,
  • do not move suspicious objects,
  • do not attempt to disarm them,
  • immediately notify the Police,
  • warn other people nearby.
