Here is today’s statement from Bolesławiec County:
In connection with information published on the local portal (istotne.pl – editor’s note) concerning Medask, the County Executive Board, at its meeting on May 4, adopted a resolution obliging the director of the district hospital in Bolesławiec to submit explanations in the matter by May 11. At the same time, it decided to conduct an inspection concerning the spending of funds transferred to the Bolesławiec hospital through county grants.
We were the first to write about the matter on April 29, in the article A company belonging to people from the hospital earns money from the hospital in Bolesławiec. The amounts remain secret. National media have now taken up the issue of the company.
Today, hospital director Kamil Barczyk told “Wyborcza” that the hospital pays Medask an average of PLN 714,515.07 per month. In 2025, this amounted to more than PLN 8.5 million in total.
For years, Medask has cooperated with Szpital św. Łukasza in Bolesławiec in providing outpatient specialist services. As we reported, this cooperation has raised questions about the transparency of financing and a possible conflict of interest.
The hospital refused to disclose the amounts paid to the company, citing business confidentiality, even though the funds come from the public healthcare system.
People professionally associated with the hospital, including doctors and individuals cooperating with the facility, appear in Medask’s structures. The very operating model also raises doubts: a public hospital uses the services of a private entity established by people linked to the facility’s professional community. Critics of this solution point out that even if everything formally complies with regulations, residents have the right to know how public money is spent and who actually benefits from this system.
Support independent journalism at istotne.pl
In recent months, the istotne.pl editorial team has published materials on matters important to residents: the hospital, county, city, foundations, companies, contracts, public spending and transparency in public life.
These are not articles written in an hour. They involve dozens of documents, public-information requests, analysis of responses, complaints to courts, legal consultations, travel, conversations with people and consistently monitoring matters that those in power would most gladly leave unquestioned.
This kind of journalism costs money. And if we are to operate truly independently of the city, county and hospital, we need readers’ support. Only thanks to you can we continue to scrutinize those in power, ask uncomfortable questions and report on matters involving public money and local connections.
That is why we ask for voluntary support for journalistic work: zrzutka.pl/z/niezalezny
Contributions are donations. Donors receive no service, access to content, advertising, publication or influence over editorial materials in return. It is simply support for independent journalism.
The funds raised will be used to cover the costs of legal consultations, travel, publication, court fees, document analysis and continued monitoring of matters important to residents.
Every contribution helps us continue to work—independently, consistently and without worrying about whether those in power like our questions.
