When the Bolesławiec municipal office published information on its website about changes to traffic organization related to the project “Expansion of the transport system, including the reconstruction of the existing bridge and construction of a new bridge over the Bóbr River in Bolesławiec, connected with the reconstruction of the existing bridge and construction of a new bridge over the Bóbr River,” a reader contacted us:

Could you address the issue of moving the bus stops to the other side of the street?

(This concerns the removal of the existing public transport stops on Widok Street and their relocation to Gen. A.E. Fieldorfa Nila Street, along a municipal road).

According to the woman, the pedestrian crossing was not adequately secured. The reader said: “Children returning from school have to cross the main road; this was not taken into account when the stops were moved. The road is very busy, and cars drive from Widok Street at high speed.”

We asked the road administrator about the matter. Magdalena Szumiata, spokesperson for the Wrocław branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways:

Every change to traffic organization is analyzed each time in terms of ensuring an appropriate level of safety for all road users, including pedestrians. The traffic organization currently in force was approved by GDDKiA after obtaining positive opinions from other road administrators, including DSDiK, the Municipal Office, the County Office and the Police.

Why were the stops moved there?

The spokesperson added:

The current traffic organization is dictated by construction work being carried out in the area of Widok Street (DW350), where a turbo roundabout is being built. The bus stops from Widok Street (DW350) were moved to Gen. Fieldorfa–Nila Street (a municipal road), near the intersection with DW350 and Ceramiczna Street in consultation with the Municipal Transport Company, which determined their current location because bus routes were redirected to Mostowa Street to avoid disruptions on DK94. The relocation of the stops was also consulted with the Municipal Office (emphasis by the editorial staff – editor’s note: istotne.pl). Further stages of the temporary traffic organization, resulting from the progress of the works, will be introduced in the near future. The bus stops will remain in their current location at least until the fourth quarter of 2026.

What about safety?

Magdalena Szumiata:

A speed limit of 40 km/h applies along Widok Street, both from the DK94 side and from the Osiecznica side. There are also warning signs indicating ongoing construction work. Pedestrian crossings have appropriate horizontal and vertical markings. Access to the temporary stops is provided by the existing pedestrian crossings located near the intersection of Widok, Ceramiczna and Gen. Fieldorfa–Nila streets (three pedestrian crossings remain in place to serve pedestrian traffic at the intersection). At present, no additional changes to the signage are planned.

And she emphasizes:

The dangerous situations mentioned by the reader were, unfortunately, largely caused by pedestrians failing to follow the existing signage. We also observed cases of people using a pedestrian crossing that is no longer in service, taking shortcuts and moving through the construction site, which is closed to pedestrian traffic. We are carrying out the work in an urban area, so we are making every effort to minimize disruptions. Unfortunately, eliminating them entirely is not possible. The project is located in a very sensitive area, so we appeal to all road users to comply with the temporary changes to traffic organization that have been introduced.

And assures:

We all care about safety and the smooth completion of this project.
