On 1 May before noon, residents of Bolesławiec and the surrounding areas could observe an aircraft repeatedly flying over the town. It was most likely an aircraft used for surveying and observation tasks. The same aircraft made similar flights over Lwówek Śląski and the areas around Legnica.
What kind of aircraft is it?
- A light, twin-engine observation aircraft,
- It has a distinctive glazed “nose”, providing excellent visibility for observing the terrain
- Typically used for:
- photogrammetry (creating maps),
- terrain scanning (aerial photography),
- patrols and monitoring.

Why was it circling around?
The aircraft was flying so-called grid patterns:
- the aircraft flies along parallel lines to scan the terrain accurately,
- each strip covers a section of the map or photograph,
- then the data is combined into a single whole.
In Poland, such flights are carried out, for example, by surveying companies – this particular aircraft may have been carrying out highly accurate spatial measurements.
Is it something “strange”?
No – it is a normal and legal operation:
- it often appears over towns and villages
- it can be mistaken for patrols or “circling without a purpose”
- in reality, it collects data for maps, investments, roads, etc.
