A serious incident occurred on Sunday evening on the A4 motorway. Initially, one of the people involved in the accident—a 33-year-old resident of Zgorzelecki County—claimed that he had only been a passenger and that the driver had fled the scene. It quickly turned out, however, that his account had little to do with reality.

From the outset, officers from the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec had doubts about the man’s account. After the accident, the 33-year-old complained of feeling unwell and was taken to hospital. There, following a brief medical examination, he was arrested.

The analysis of the evidence collected proved to be a breakthrough in the case. Police established that the arrested man had been driving an Audi and had caused the accident, in which a married couple travelling in the other vehicle was injured. In addition, items that may have come from a crime were found in the car, which may have been the reason for the attempt to mislead the authorities.

The man was charged with three serious offences. The first concerns causing a road accident. The second is burglary involving a lorry, from which the clothing found in his car allegedly came. The third charge concerns a gross violation of road-safety rules.

Investigators established that on 26 April, the same man had significantly exceeded the speed limit on the A4 motorway, exposing other road users to serious danger. Because he acted under recidivism conditions, the 33-year-old faces up to 15 years in prison.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are examining whether the arrested man is connected with other property offences committed in neighbouring counties.
